Advanced Carbon and Diamond Growth Concepts
Defiant Materials is developing concepts for advanced carbon materials synthesis, including approaches relevant to controlled growth of non-cubic diamond-type structures. The primary motivation is the electronic properties predicted for these materials, a favorable combination of bandgap, dopant behavior, and carrier mobility relevant to high-voltage power electronics and radiation-hard, high-temperature electronics for space and other extreme-environment applications. This work also has potential relevance to advanced thermal management and high-performance structural materials. At a technical level, the work focuses on questions of crystal stacking, deposition conditions, and templating effects that may influence phase selection during growth. This concept is the subject of a pending U.S. patent application.
Gradient Mineralization and Polymer-Derived Protective Materials
Defiant Materials is also developing materials concepts that combine toughness and hardness through controlled structural transformation. One area of focus is generating useful property gradients in polymer-derived systems through mineralization or ceramic-conversion approaches, exploring whether tough precursor materials can be transformed into hybrid or graded structures with improved protective performance. Potential applications include lightweight armor, protective structures, and thermally robust materials for aerospace and defense.
