Selected Innovation Areas

Below are non-confidential examples of technical themes and research directions of interest.

Advanced Carbon and Diamond Growth Concepts
Defiant Materials is interested in concept development for advanced carbon materials, including approaches relevant to controlled growth of non-cubic diamond-type structures. This work focuses on high-level questions of crystal stacking, deposition conditions, templating effects, and other factors that may influence phase selection during growth. Applications of interest include extreme-environment semiconductors, advanced thermal management, and high-performance materials systems. Public descriptions are intentionally limited to non-confidential summaries and do not disclose implementation details.

Gradient Mineralization and Polymer-Derived Protective Materials
Defiant Materials is also interested in materials concepts that combine toughness and hardness through controlled structural transformation. One area of focus is the possibility of generating useful property gradients in polymer-derived systems through mineralization or ceramic-conversion approaches. At a high level, this work explores whether tough precursor materials can be transformed into hybrid or graded structures with improved protective performance. Potential applications include lightweight armor, protective structures, and thermally robust materials. Public-facing descriptions are intentionally high level and omit proprietary details.
